After the Mississippi River floods, leaving the Southeast Missouri a diluvian wasteland, good Samaritan David Miller hops into his boat and trolls to neighboring towns to offer his assistance. Brett Williams' second novel/novella release, FROM MURKY DEPTHS, is a well-written tale that borrows on some familiar Lovecraftian themes. A resident of a southeastern Missouri town decides to become a Good Samaritan in the wake of Biblical-like flooding in the area( which makes one wonder if this tale was penned after the horrendous rain and flooding in April of last year) and sets off by boat to a nearby town to offer assistance. He discovers a curious and ultimately deadly coven of beings residing there and awaiting release upon the next heavy rain. It's a very engaging, but short romp that deals with his attempt, along with a small contingent of others "in the know," to slow down, if not curtail, the coven's growth, which could lead to deadly consequences for all. My only quibble with the story, and which kept it from being a solid five-star work, was that it actually broke no new ground in the Lovecraftian Mythos. What we have is a very admirable tale that, with a little more ingenuity, could have been quite a bit more in the long run. I'll definitely be looking out for more of Williams' splendid tales!Product details

I very much enjoyed this tight, well written novella. Brett has created a new strain of the Cthulhu Mythos with his Clayton, Missouri setting peopled with rustics worshiping other gods. The monsters reminded me of a cross between The Creature From The Black Lagoon and Lovecraft's ocean dwelling "deep ones." The story moves quickly through a very creepy atmosphere. I highly recommend this to be read during a thunderstorm by candlelight.
